A guide to spa speak

First time visiting a spa or 10th - it doesn't matter; the range of treatments & experiences can be confusing. If you're not sure about a treatment don't be afraid to ask. Our glossary is a start to understanding the terms but not definitive - the list is truly endless.

Manicure

Hands are soaked and exfoliated to remove dead skin cells, cuticles are groomed and nails are trimmed, shaped, buffed and/or coated with nail polish. Sometimes includes a hand and/or arm massage

Massage

There are lots of different types of massage techniques but all involve some form of stroking, rolling, pressing, kneading of skin and muscles. Some styles aid relaxation, others are aimed at revitalizing the body and mind

Meditation

Method of deep breathing and concentration, which allows the body and mind to switch off and achieve a very deep state of relaxation

Moor Mud

A rich concentration of plant deposits in the form of mud, which is believed to have medicinal characteristics. Cleanses and detoxifies the skin and helps to ease sore or tired muscles during treatment
