Because He's Worth It - 29 Nov 2007

The Irish Times reports how spa treatments are a hit with men.

Louise Holden reports how Irish spas are keen to strip traditional therapies of feminine overtones. Fitness facials, power massages, golfer's tonics are all enticing men into spas alone. Mark Browne, General Manager at Monart in Wexford estimates 40% of its clientele is now male. "Women seem to be the initial decision makers and when the male arrives the thought of wearing a robe for two or three days is a little daunting. However the men are the ones who seem to relax easier and by the time the guests are ready to depart, the man is the one who doesn't want to get back in his clothes. Interestingly he is usually the one to book the return visit."

Make Mine a Massage - 29 Nov 2007

Massage therapy remains the most-requested treatment at U.S. spas.

The International Spa Association (ISPA) released preliminary findings from its ISPA Global Consumer Report earlier this year. Among the findings: • Full-body massage therapy tops the list of most-received treatments in the United States, with 68 percent of spa-goers reporting this as their number-one choice. In second and third place are manicures (57 percent) and pedicures (56 percent). • The United States has the largest annual number of spa guests, with more than 32 million. In second, third and fourth place are Thailand (27 million), Japan (19 million) and Italy (18 million). • There are 150 million active spa consumers worldwide. • Sixty-nine percent of U.S. spa guests are female. • Regardless of where they live, the primary reasons spa-goers visit spas are to relax and relieve/reduce stress.

Slieve Donard Resort and Spa - 16 Nov 2007

£15 million transformation at Northern Irelands premier resort and spa.

It took 125,354 bricks, 143 new windows, 7,600sq metres of carpet, 78,529 gallons of water (to fill the pool!), 26 bricklayers, 23 joiners and even a ‘creative water engineer’, but 18 months and £15million later, in October 2006, the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, Northern Ireland, threw open its doors to 70,000sq ft of luxurious hotel living. The Slieve Donard has stood at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, Newcastle, Northern Ireland for more than a century. Standing in six acres of private grounds, leading to an expansive beach and the world famous Royal County Down golf course, the hotel’s redevelopment has drawn on the elements of natural beauty that envelop its imposing Victorian architecture. Magnificent views across the Irish Sea bring the ‘outside in’; creating an environment for relaxation that is second to none. The transformation last year added more than 50 new enormous and superbly appointed bedrooms to give a total of 175, as well as a 16 treatment room Spa - one of the largest and probably the most highly specified in Ireland. Designed by ESPA, the company responsible for Spa Meccas such as The Metropole Hotel in Monte Carlo and The Peninsula Hotel, Hong Kong, the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa will undoubtedly rival any spa in Europe today. As well as treatments, designed to balance mind, body and soul, the extensive leisure and exercise facilities include a 20 metre pool, vitality pool, thermal heat experiences, fitness suite with top of the range cardio vascular and resistance machines and luxuriously appointed changing rooms.
