Top Spa Trends for 2009 - 09 Dec 2008

Energy Medicine, Eco-Embedded Spas, In-Transit Spa-Going & more

We're fans of Susie Ellis, President of Spafinder, who writes a great blog on all things spa. Spafinder have just announced their "Top 10 Spa Trends to Watch in 2009" so here's a little preview of things to come.

Energy Medicine - think chakra balancing, light and sound therapy, acupuncture - bite size doses of energy medicine coupled with traditional massage. Needs an open mind but we think most spa-goers have one anyway.

Casinos & Spas - the largest spa in the world with 69,000 square feet and 90 treatment rooms is the new Canyon Ranch SpaClub at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Just in case you need a little head massage after losing your last dollar.

The Medical and Spa Tourism Shuffle - imagine a hospital with serene gardens, feng shui designed private rooms, 24-hour room service, organic local cuisine, on-demand massage and a menu of alternative and healing therapies. A real cross-pollination of "medicine" and "spa".

Eco-Embedded Spas - means expanded green initiatives which are quietly implemented by the spa including moves to maximise energy efficiency.

Trains, Boats & Planes - In-Transit Spa-Going - spa-ing while traveling. London's Heathrow Airport already has 4 spas to choose from and Crystal Cruises are offering a Mind-Body-Spirit focus in March on its Asia Cruise. We've wondered before when we might see a swanky day-spa in the departures area at Dublin Airport but so far, we're still limited to the very public massage chairs.

Brain Health & "Mind" Gyms - brain workouts, juggling, puzzles combined with healthy food and relaxation will all help spa-goers think a little about brain health.

Learning Labs for Stress Reduction - spa staff will become teachers, sharing their knowledge about stress reduction techniques with spa-goers and offering mini-treatments which will allow people manage stress without spending a fortune or taking an hour out of their day. One of our most popular packages is the Luxury 20-20-20 Overnight Package offered by Radisson SAS Limerick where clients can have a taste of 3 different treatments in one hour.

Mindful Spending- need we even say it, value for money and tangible results will be key. Good news for the consumer and a great way for spas to get creative with packaging.

Move Over Baby Boomers - Gen X and Y are discovering spas. This means spas will want to evaluate existing programmes and packages and set out to meet the expectations of what is a very different generation. Gen X and Y are the first truly tech-savvy generation, tend to replace family with friends, postpone marriage and parenting and will perceive spa-going as a necessity rather than a treat. To compete, spas will really need to think about how they communicate with this generation and online booking capabilty will be key.

Brands, Brands, Brands - with almost 72,000 spas in the world, consumers may want to base their choice around known brands. ESPA has a very strong identity and is probably the biggest "brand" in Ireland. Ritz-Carlton, Europe Resort, Maryborough House, The Culloden, The Slieve Donard are all ESPA spas.

Probably the clearest emerging macro trend is the interweaving of medicine and spas in unprecedented ways with spas poised to increase their roles in wellness and healthcare, while hospitals evolve to embrace spa-like offerings and hospitality. We wonder how far off this convergance is in Ireland where, despite the best efforts of our over-worked doctors and nurses, we're still some distance from treating patients with the kind of holistic, individual-centric care that many spas aim for.

The Grooming Rooms - NEW! - 01 Dec 2008

Dublin's first grooming emporium exclusively for men.

We're really pleased to introduce a very new concept, and something special, to the world of Spa Ireland.

The Grooming Rooms is Dublin's first grooming emporium dedicated exclusively to men and is perfectly located at 16 South William Street, just a stone's throw from Grafton Street.

This is a place where men can relax and unwind as privacy is paramount. With four treatment rooms, five private cutting stations and a luxurious waiting room, grooming needs are attended to professionally and efficiently. Classic barbering services are complemented by a wide range of treatments and a selection of packages, each one designed with great care.

Having featured recently on Off the Rails, we have no doubt The Grooming Rooms will become a firm favourite with our customers and it will be no time before the girls amongst us are demanding an equivalent for the ladies.
