via.Helsinki - 21 Apr 2008
Sauna with a Runway view.
Finnair will open a luxurious Spa and Wellness centre in autumn 2009 adjacent to its new via.Helsinki Lounge in the Helsinki Airport terminal extension. The lounge and spa will offer unique wellness services to Finnair’s growing number of Europe-Asia passengers.
The Finnair lounge and spa will be constructed in the Helsinki Airport Non-Schengen Terminal extension, which will be completed in autumn 2009. The space covers an area of 1,580 square metres. The lounge and spa will be open to Finnair and oneworld top three tier customers and business class passengers as well as at a charge to all other customers.
”The Spa & Wellness centre offer Finnair customers quality spa and wellness services. The facilities include a sauna with a view of the runway, a mineral water bath, cold water baths as well as rooms for different wellness-treatments,” says Esa Saarinen, in charge of the spa design.
We wonder if in time Dublin airport will follow suit. Dublin Airport Authority have plans which include a 7,500 sq m extension to the existing terminal to provide more comfort, space retail and catering choice for passengers en route to Piers A and D; close to €100m worth of new aircraft parking areas, taxiways and environmental features on the airfield; and a new multi-storey car park and four-star hotel in close proximity to T2. The €2bn Transformation Programme incorporates over 120 separate projects in the first pre-2010 stage alone while the next stage, up to 2015, will include many others including a new parallel runway.
No mention of a spa though.

Grand Designs - 09 Apr 2008
Spa-Ireland's very own Carton House celebrates three major Awards in just three weeks.
As it's first of three awards won in three weeks, Carton House in Maynooth Co. Kildare, has been voted the overall winner of the Conversion of an Existing Building to Hotel Use. The European Hotel Design Awards
Ceremony in London judged the nominated hotels on intelligent use of space and materials, sensitivity to operational issues, heritage and planning requirements and sustainability and the surrounding environment. Judges praised Carton as one of the strongest projects entered into the competition, and were pleased by the hotel's design. Carton House successfully connects their new world 21st century wing to the traditional 18th century mansion without disturbing the feel of the property's natural surroundings.
It's second award, 2007's Best New Hotel, was presented at the Annual Irish Hospitality Industry Awards. The hotel's contractor and architect, Murray O'Laoire Architects / Pierse Contracting, also won an award at the Irish
Architecture Opus Awards for their beautiful job restoring the estate. Judges admired how well the history of the estate was maintained and its unqiue 1,100-acres of park lands.
The third big win, for all you golf lovers, awarded Carton House as the European Golf Resort of The Year 2008. The International Association of Golf Tour Operators must have been impressed by The Carton House's two breathtaking courses, which allow golfers to simultaneously enjoy the beautiful Irish landscape and the challenge of the game.
Congratulations to Carton House on these three important awards!
