Capella Castlemartyr - NEW - 29 May 2008

Something Special - one of Condé Nast Traveller’s 2008 “Hot List” and Robb Report’s “Ultimate Escapes”

The newest addition to Spa Irelands choice of top spas in Ireland is the Capella Castlemartyr and already it's winning top accolades from Condé Nast.

Located in East Cork Capella Castlemartyr is set on a 220 acre estate highlighted by a grand, fully restored manor house adjacent to the dramatic ruins of an 800-year-old castle. Capella Castlemartyr offers 103 guestrooms and suites, as well as three signature restaurants and an indoor pool. The 24,400 square-foot Auriga spa and wellness centre comprises 10 treatments rooms, vitality pools, an ozone treated swimming pool, steam room, saunas, a spa suite, a yoga and Pilates studio and a Spa Café.

This is one place where the setting is just as special as the property is itself. The lush, expansive grounds are home to a plethora of delightful and unexpected discoveries, including a swan lake and nearby, an ancient chapel, Mitchell’s Woods and the tomb of the fourth Earl of Shannon. Irish culture is integrated into the resort experience, whether in the form of readings by well-known local authors or Irish dance performances in the garden. Picnic lunches can be arranged along the estate’s meandering paths. Outdoor lounges with log fire pits are ideal spaces in which to linger and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

The Truth about Beauty Creams - 14 May 2008

Channel 4 Dispatches explores some of the myths

We watched the recent Channel 4 Dispatches programme - "The Truth about Beauty Creams" (Monday 12th May) with interest.

In the UK an estimated half a billion pounds is spent every year on face creams that claim to make women - and men - look younger. The marketing for these creams often features scientific, hi-tech sounding ingredients - yet unlike drug companies the beauty industry does not have to publish clinical trials showing whether these creams are effective.

Channel 4 investigated the promises made by some of the best-selling anti-ageing creams - putting the claims made on packaging, adverts and at beauty counters to the test, along with secret filming of some truly cringe-worthy sales babble at cosmetic counters.

It confirmed what we already believed - the real value of many beauty creams lies in the promises they make and our need to buy into hope; hope of softer, clearer, younger looking skin. Some seemed to work, some didn't and price meant absolutely nothing with a a simple moisturiser, containing sun screen, getting the thumbs up by testers.

The experts agreed that the best way to maintain gorgeous skin is to protect it from the sun. Ultimately, the wrinkles will come to us all but as we head into what promises to be a beautiful summer, we should at least try to slow the process down. Top tip - next time you have a facial, ask your therapist to recommend his/her favourite sun protection cream - they usually know their stuff.

Skin Good Enough to Eat - 06 May 2008

Top Product Houses tempt us with their new product ranges.

Ella Bache and Elemis, two of the top skincare product houses around, both draw on interesting ingredients in their latest offerings.

For Ella Bache, their new EYE CANDY KIT encourages you to transport yourself (and your admirers) back to the years "when fairy floss, big, round lollipops and carousels ruled your lives. When crow’s feet occurred only on crows and you were way too young to have ever heard of scary terms like dehydration and puffiness". Simply apply their Energising Crème Masque and Special Eye Crème to your tired eyes and watch peanut oil and beeswax work their magic to bring back their bounce and sparkle "as though they had just caught glimpse of the biggest and most exciting candy store in the world". We love anything that promises us sparkly eyes. Ella Bache available exclusively at the Muckross Park Hotel.

On 13th May Elemis launch their new range - Maximum Moisture Day Cream and Maximum Replenish Night Cream. Ingredients include Prickly Pear, Tamarind, African Baobab Tree and Lotus Flower and recognise that desert plants, renowned for their adaptation to extreme climatic conditions, can help us mere mortals achieve the same effect. For Elemis Spas, check out the spa-ireland.com advanced search, go to the Products Plus tab and click on Elemis.

Have a Cup of (Lyons) Tea - 02 May 2008

It's official - it will relax you!

7 in 10 Irish people feel more relaxed after a cup of tea, according to research commissioned by TNS MRBI for Lyons Tea. It seems the effect is down to theanine, a compound found naturally in black, green, oolong and white tea which revives, relaxes and refreshes.

Dr Patricia Heavey, consultant nutritionist to Lyons Tea says "The research shows that theanine stimulates specific brain activity which is associated with a relaxed yet alert state of mind."

Spa-ireland.com was delighted to be chosen by Lyons Tea for their recent promotional campaign whereby competition entrants won Spa Ireland gift vouchers. We can just picture the winners sitting down with a nice cup of green tea as they plan which spa to choose.....lovely!
