Top Spa Trends for 2009 - 09 Dec 2008

Energy Medicine, Eco-Embedded Spas, In-Transit Spa-Going & more

We're fans of Susie Ellis, President of Spafinder, who writes a great blog on all things spa. Spafinder have just announced their "Top 10 Spa Trends to Watch in 2009" so here's a little preview of things to come.

Energy Medicine - think chakra balancing, light and sound therapy, acupuncture - bite size doses of energy medicine coupled with traditional massage. Needs an open mind but we think most spa-goers have one anyway.

Casinos & Spas - the largest spa in the world with 69,000 square feet and 90 treatment rooms is the new Canyon Ranch SpaClub at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Just in case you need a little head massage after losing your last dollar.

The Medical and Spa Tourism Shuffle - imagine a hospital with serene gardens, feng shui designed private rooms, 24-hour room service, organic local cuisine, on-demand massage and a menu of alternative and healing therapies. A real cross-pollination of "medicine" and "spa".

Eco-Embedded Spas - means expanded green initiatives which are quietly implemented by the spa including moves to maximise energy efficiency.

Trains, Boats & Planes - In-Transit Spa-Going - spa-ing while traveling. London's Heathrow Airport already has 4 spas to choose from and Crystal Cruises are offering a Mind-Body-Spirit focus in March on its Asia Cruise. We've wondered before when we might see a swanky day-spa in the departures area at Dublin Airport but so far, we're still limited to the very public massage chairs.

Brain Health & "Mind" Gyms - brain workouts, juggling, puzzles combined with healthy food and relaxation will all help spa-goers think a little about brain health.

Learning Labs for Stress Reduction - spa staff will become teachers, sharing their knowledge about stress reduction techniques with spa-goers and offering mini-treatments which will allow people manage stress without spending a fortune or taking an hour out of their day. One of our most popular packages is the Luxury 20-20-20 Overnight Package offered by Radisson SAS Limerick where clients can have a taste of 3 different treatments in one hour.

Mindful Spending- need we even say it, value for money and tangible results will be key. Good news for the consumer and a great way for spas to get creative with packaging.

Move Over Baby Boomers - Gen X and Y are discovering spas. This means spas will want to evaluate existing programmes and packages and set out to meet the expectations of what is a very different generation. Gen X and Y are the first truly tech-savvy generation, tend to replace family with friends, postpone marriage and parenting and will perceive spa-going as a necessity rather than a treat. To compete, spas will really need to think about how they communicate with this generation and online booking capabilty will be key.

Brands, Brands, Brands - with almost 72,000 spas in the world, consumers may want to base their choice around known brands. ESPA has a very strong identity and is probably the biggest "brand" in Ireland. Ritz-Carlton, Europe Resort, Maryborough House, The Culloden, The Slieve Donard are all ESPA spas.

Probably the clearest emerging macro trend is the interweaving of medicine and spas in unprecedented ways with spas poised to increase their roles in wellness and healthcare, while hospitals evolve to embrace spa-like offerings and hospitality. We wonder how far off this convergance is in Ireland where, despite the best efforts of our over-worked doctors and nurses, we're still some distance from treating patients with the kind of holistic, individual-centric care that many spas aim for.

Simply the Best - 20 Oct 2008

Kingsley Hotel, Cork & Queen Beauty Emporium, Dublin win top awards

Last week, Georgina Campbell’s Ireland Guide 2009 was launched together with the announcement of the winners of the 11th Annual ‘Awards for Excellence’.
The Kingsley Hotel, Cork was deservedly named Business Hotel of the Year 2009, an award it previously won in 2004. It's rare for a corporate style hotel to embrace business and leisure customers equally but The Kingsley manages to do so, thanks in part to the success of the Yauvana Spa which is Irelands only authentic Ayurvedic Spa and which consistently gets rave feedback from customers.

At another award event across town, Queen Beauty Emporium, located just 5 minutes walk from Dublin's Grafton Street, was named Best Newcomer in the Schwarzkopf business awards. The mantra at Queen is "Love What we Do" and you'll get that vibe as soon as you walk in the door. Just one year old, the team at Queen are proving that quality hair and beauty treatments can come with a smile. Book yourself a pre-Christmas hair and make-up session now before it gets so busy you have to beg to get an appointment.

MANKIND - 07 Aug 2008

The latest addition to our Spa Shop, hundreds of grooming products for men.

Introducing MANKIND, dedicated to offering the best available products and advice for men.

The folks at MANKIND put it best - “As blokes, how many of us want to approach a female assistant on a department store counter and crack open a conversation about in-growing hairs or a flaky scalp? And can you really feel confident in the advice you receive? Is the assistant offering you impartial advice? Do we really want the hassle of going to the high street anyway?”

Giving you the freedom to browse hundreds of products online, this site does away with any self-consciousness. Every order includes a few trial samples and there are regular loyalty discounts of up to 5%. We also like the fact that MANKIND are not aligned to specific manufacturers so choice is wide and advice is impartial.

Lovely Feet - 25 Jul 2008

Medi Pedicure arrives at Rain Spa and Wellness Clinic, Radisson SAS, Limerick

Rain Spa and Wellness Clinic have just launched their new Medi Pedicure Treatment at the Radisson SAS Hotel and Spa, Limerick.

This new innovative foot treatment removes Calluses, Corns, Cracked Heels, Rough and Dry Hard Skin and any fungal or bacterial infections. The Danné alkaline foot treatment is 100% hygienic, safe and best of all effective, while achieving a more superior result than aggressively blading or rasping skin from the feet. The product applied to the feet dissolves and softens redundant cuticle build up and then returns the skin to a normal pH level. Visible changes after just one treatment give you your baby feet back - great news if like me, your feet are screaming for TLC.

The Medi Pedicure normally costs €75.00 and takes an hour but it's on offer during August for a very special rate of €55.00. Don't forget that the Radisson Hotel Limerick have a fantastic overnight spa package which can be booked online - click here

Lough Erne Golf Resort - NEW - 18 Jun 2008

Lakeside luxury, a unique Thai Spa and a Nick Faldo golf course. Heaven!

The recently opened Lough Erne Golf Resort resides between two prominent lakes on its own peninsula, where you can expect to relax instantly in the fresh, clean atmosphere and allow the breathtaking views, rippling lakes and green landscape take control of your senses. With the construction of Lough Erne Golf Resort, the owners have created an exclusive secluded resort hotel that provides two championship golf courses suitable for players of all standards (the Nick Faldo course is scheduled for completion later this year).

This is a £25 million project and it shows. The hotel & lodges are built using the finest materials including reconstituted sandstone that surrounds and enhances the Danish timber windows in keeping with the style of the resort. The overall effect is finished with stunning natural slate roofing. Every attention has been paid to the environs and there are over 300 pictures reflecting the area displayed throughout the Resort.

The natural surroundings and “country house” feel is enhanced by a spectacular arrival hall with a view straight over the lakes and friendly staff to greet you on arrival. The Gordon Wilson Library also offers wonderful views of the lake, while the Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a fine Irish whiskey, wine or cocktail.

Each of the suites and bedrooms in the main hotel and any of the 25 lodges offer a breathtaking view – either of the hotel gardens, the rolling Fermanagh countryside or the magical lakes. All bedrooms provide the latest in modern technology, as well as every creature comfort – including generous sized bathrooms with separate Claw bath and Rain shower.

Lough Erne offers an innovative, unique Thai Spa with 8 treatment rooms, dedicated thermal areas and a stunning circular turret relaxation lounge with spectacular views over Castle Hume Lough. The Erb Mantra is "daily bliss for your body and soul inspired by ancient Thai remedies and rituals". Aside from the spa, other health facilities are also on offer at the hotel including a 12 metre indoor heated mosaic infinity pool with Whirlpool, Steam Room and Sauna overlooking the 18th Green and Lake.

Vinotherapy - 18 Jun 2008

Spa therapies based on wine get the thumbs up

We were intrigued by the Vinotherapy Facial offered at one of our spa partners, Temple Spa. Described as a rejuvenating anti-aging treatment with a combination of Chardonnay grapes, Chianti grape must and exotic spices it definitely stands out as one of the more innovative treatments around.

So we consulted our personal wine guru, Kevin Ecock, wine columnist for Easy Food and Wealth magazines to get his thoughts. "It is accepted that moderate wine drinking is good for our health. Reports from around the world are now suggesting that spa therapies based on wine and grape extracts are equally good for us. Grapes and their wines are high in polyphenols which exhibit powerful antioxidant properties. These in turn fight off free radicals both in our blood system and also in our skin. As such they are being touted as strong anti ageing and anti wrinkle agents. Grape skins, grapes seeds and wine itself are being utilised by a variety of therapy treatments. So far all the news is positive." says Kevin.

Solis Lough Eske Castle - NEW - 16 Jun 2008

At last - Donegal is on our Spa map with a very special introductory rate at this new gem.

We've been waiting for something special in Donegal and are delighted to introduce our first Donegal Spa Partner - Solis Lough Eske Castle, already voted one of the Top New Hot Properties in the World for 2008 by Condé Nast Traveller

Extra large bedrooms have all the comforts you need and you'll find it hard to resist the luxurious leather sofas positioned invitingly in the snug public areas.

The spa and pool building sit in the original location of the Glass House and there is an extensive and imaginative treatment menu using Sodashi, 100% organic products.

To celebrate the launch of Solis Lough Eske Castle on our website, there is a very special midweek package which includes 2 nights overnight accommodation with Full Irish Breakfast and Dinner on one night in Cedars Restaurant for only €160.00 per person sharing - exceptional value so don't hesitate to book.

The Power of Yoga - 06 Jun 2008

Can Yoga kill back pain?

We know many of you are yoga-fans but did you know it may play a key role in relieving lower back pain? So says a recent US study of 101 adults who suffered with persistant muscular pain. Divided into three groups, they were assigned an activity with the aim of easing their back troubles. The first group undertook Yoga classes for 12 weeks, the second took therapeutic exercise classes while the third sought the use of a self help book.

After 3 months the yogis reported better back function. while those who did the standard excercise class suffered another 3 months before they too could report an improvement. Interestingly, Viniyoga was the type of yoga that was used in the study which focuses on coordinating movement with the breathing techniques.

No mention of how the self-help book readers fared!

The Truth about Beauty Creams - 14 May 2008

Channel 4 Dispatches explores some of the myths

We watched the recent Channel 4 Dispatches programme - "The Truth about Beauty Creams" (Monday 12th May) with interest.

In the UK an estimated half a billion pounds is spent every year on face creams that claim to make women - and men - look younger. The marketing for these creams often features scientific, hi-tech sounding ingredients - yet unlike drug companies the beauty industry does not have to publish clinical trials showing whether these creams are effective.

Channel 4 investigated the promises made by some of the best-selling anti-ageing creams - putting the claims made on packaging, adverts and at beauty counters to the test, along with secret filming of some truly cringe-worthy sales babble at cosmetic counters.

It confirmed what we already believed - the real value of many beauty creams lies in the promises they make and our need to buy into hope; hope of softer, clearer, younger looking skin. Some seemed to work, some didn't and price meant absolutely nothing with a a simple moisturiser, containing sun screen, getting the thumbs up by testers.

The experts agreed that the best way to maintain gorgeous skin is to protect it from the sun. Ultimately, the wrinkles will come to us all but as we head into what promises to be a beautiful summer, we should at least try to slow the process down. Top tip - next time you have a facial, ask your therapist to recommend his/her favourite sun protection cream - they usually know their stuff.

Skin Good Enough to Eat - 06 May 2008

Top Product Houses tempt us with their new product ranges.

Ella Bache and Elemis, two of the top skincare product houses around, both draw on interesting ingredients in their latest offerings.

For Ella Bache, their new EYE CANDY KIT encourages you to transport yourself (and your admirers) back to the years "when fairy floss, big, round lollipops and carousels ruled your lives. When crow’s feet occurred only on crows and you were way too young to have ever heard of scary terms like dehydration and puffiness". Simply apply their Energising Crème Masque and Special Eye Crème to your tired eyes and watch peanut oil and beeswax work their magic to bring back their bounce and sparkle "as though they had just caught glimpse of the biggest and most exciting candy store in the world". We love anything that promises us sparkly eyes. Ella Bache available exclusively at the Muckross Park Hotel.

On 13th May Elemis launch their new range - Maximum Moisture Day Cream and Maximum Replenish Night Cream. Ingredients include Prickly Pear, Tamarind, African Baobab Tree and Lotus Flower and recognise that desert plants, renowned for their adaptation to extreme climatic conditions, can help us mere mortals achieve the same effect. For Elemis Spas, check out the spa-ireland.com advanced search, go to the Products Plus tab and click on Elemis.

It's official - it will relax you!

7 in 10 Irish people feel more relaxed after a cup of tea, according to research commissioned by TNS MRBI for Lyons Tea. It seems the effect is down to theanine, a compound found naturally in black, green, oolong and white tea which revives, relaxes and refreshes.

Dr Patricia Heavey, consultant nutritionist to Lyons Tea says "The research shows that theanine stimulates specific brain activity which is associated with a relaxed yet alert state of mind."

Spa-ireland.com was delighted to be chosen by Lyons Tea for their recent promotional campaign whereby competition entrants won Spa Ireland gift vouchers. We can just picture the winners sitting down with a nice cup of green tea as they plan which spa to choose.....lovely!

Sauna with a Runway view.

Finnair will open a luxurious Spa and Wellness centre in autumn 2009 adjacent to its new via.Helsinki Lounge in the Helsinki Airport terminal extension. The lounge and spa will offer unique wellness services to Finnair’s growing number of Europe-Asia passengers.

The Finnair lounge and spa will be constructed in the Helsinki Airport Non-Schengen Terminal extension, which will be completed in autumn 2009. The space covers an area of 1,580 square metres. The lounge and spa will be open to Finnair and oneworld top three tier customers and business class passengers as well as at a charge to all other customers.

”The Spa & Wellness centre offer Finnair customers quality spa and wellness services. The facilities include a sauna with a view of the runway, a mineral water bath, cold water baths as well as rooms for different wellness-treatments,” says Esa Saarinen, in charge of the spa design.

We wonder if in time Dublin airport will follow suit. The €2bn Transformation Programme incorporates over 120 separate projects in the first pre-2010 stage alone while the next stage, up to 2015, will include many others including a new parallel runway.

No mention of a spa though.

As it's first of three awards won in three weeks, Carton House in Maynooth Co. Kildare, has been voted the overall winner of the Conversion of an Existing Building to Hotel Use. The European Hotel Design Awards Ceremony in London judged the nominated hotels on intelligent use of space and materials, sensitivity to operational issues, heritage and planning requirements and sustainability and the surrounding environment. Get Thee to a Spa - 19 Mar 2008

Research reveals that beautiful applicants are more successful at securing loans.

A paper by Enrichetta Ravina at New York University reveals borrowers whose appearance is rated above average are 1.41 percentage points more likely to get a loan and, given a loan, pay 81 basis points less than an average-looking borrower with the same credentials.

However, beautiful borrowers are far more likely to default on those loans and miss payments, taking them into the group of borrowers referred to as "delinquents". Given the current credit squeeze, perhaps we can expect more people to visit spas - on credit of course - before approaching their bank for an overdraft.

With grateful thanks to Amarach Research for highlighting yet another hard fact of life.

Are We Bad Boys & Girls? - 19 Feb 2008

We don't think so, according to Amarach Research and a recent Eurobarometer study.

According to Amarach Research, though barely a week goes by when we are not reminded of some bad habit Irish people have acquired, it is encouraging to realise that most people in Ireland lead relatively healthy lives. This was brought home in a recent Eurobarometer report on health in Europe. It found that:

  • Only 30% of Irish adults smoke - the vast majority don’t.
  • Only 15% of adults never or rarely exercise - 85% do.
  • Only 14% say they are overweight - 86% don’t think so.
  • Only 13% admit to not eating very healthily - 87% do.
  • Only 14% tend to drink too much alcohol - 86% don’t.
  • Only 11% suffer from stress at work -89% don’t.

The picture that emerges from the survey is of a relatively sensible, healthy population not inclined to any of the extreme behaviours that so pre-occupy the news headlines. Assuming all those who responded to the survey did so honestly!

You can read more about the Eurobarometer study EB67 at http://ec.europa.eu/public_opinion/index_en.htm

The Cream with Push-up-Effect - 12 Feb 2008

Babor Bust Contouring Lotion is giving busts a lift, without the price of going under the knife.

Firm and beautiful breasts - without the risks of plastic surgery? Surely every woman’s dream! With BABOR BUST CONTOURING LOTION this dream could become reality in time for the 2008 Bikini Season. According to BABOR, this smooth and fast acting gel-cream has a proven innovative CellActiveFormula and a noticeable anti-Cellulite effect. The BABOR BUST CONTOURING LOTION with Push-up-Effect is used in the morning and evening after cleansing, using circular movements to rub the lotion into the breast area. Fat storage in the chest is activated, improving the firmness and elasticity of the skin, which gives the breasts strength and stability. After daily applications over 80 days, the breast volume can increase by up to 13 per cent. The breasts are firmer, have a clearly improved outline and have an altogether more youthful and fresher appearance. This effect can be attributed to neither witchcraft nor magic, but rather to two active ingredients, which have been invaluable to women since antiquity. The BABOR BUST CONTOURING LOTION contains Mangostan extracts to stimulate the formation and storage of fat reserves by Polysaccaride, Flavonode and alkaloids, which cause the enlargement of the breast size. Quince extract – also appropriately known as the fruit of Aphrodite - improves the elasticity of the skin with Polysaccaride, vitamins and minerals and this way supports their basic and underlying function. The Babor product brand is available at the Ice House Spa in Ballina.

Thicker Skin? You bet! - 29 Jan 2008

ESPA MEN recognises the difference

It's a fact that men's skin is thicker than women's, 30% thicker; it produces more sebum and has more hair follicles; it has higher levels of collagen and elastin (the materials which help to keep skin more flexible and youthful looking). These intrinsic differences coupled with increasingly pressured lifestyles and a natural desire for simplicity has led ESPA to develop ESPA MEN. Effective and beneficial skin care essentials that will prepare, nourish and protect skin whilst invigorating your senses. The MEN'S PURIFYING FACIAL, SHOULDER AND SCALP MASSAGE, is a deeply relaxing Men's facial treatment, incorporating the ESPA MEN products, specifically designed to suit men's skin care needs - bringing a sense of peace, whilst revitalising the skin. Check out the ESPA spas on spa-ireland.com by logging onto our advanced search and checking ESPA on the Products Plus tab.
