Dr Hauschka - 10 Dec 2010
Keeping Jennifer Aniston Beautiful
Ever wondered how Jennifer Aniston keeps looking so fresh and naturally beautiful?
Aniston gave the lowdown on her skin care regime to Instyle for their October edition and shared the reason why she avoids wearing red lipstick. “Although I’ve experimented with it over the years……it makes me feel like a clown”. Aniston prefers the natural look for lips and apparently says “I just stick to Dr.Hauschka’s Lip Balm".
She also uses Dr.Hauschka Moisturising Day Cream,100ml (€37.10) every day as part of her beauty routine and continues, “I’ve used Dr.Hauschka products for years; they really suit my skin and every time I try something else my skin reacts badly, so I stick to what I know works.” Sound advice.
To avail of the products go to your nearest Dr.Hauschka stockist (nationwide at selected Health Stores, Pharmacies, All LIFE Pharmacies and McCabes@Clerys).
If you can't locate a stockist near you, contact Dr.Hauschka Ireland Ltd on 01-862-7250. They'll be happy to point you in the right direction so you can have the Aniston healthy look for Christmas.

Spa Trends - 10 Nov 2010
Economic Impact on US Spas - what's the latest?
It's fair to say that spas in Ireland, particularly those attached to hotels or resorts, have had a tough time over the past year trying to maintain standards, invest in product and facilities, whilst still earn some kind of a return on investment that any business demands. The USA is some way ahead of us in the spa and wellness sector but it's interesting to see how the spa industry there is faring, thanks to the latest State of Spa Travel survey findings published by our friends at SpaFinder.com.
The SpaFinder survey was conducted with 250-plus global travel agents in July 2010 and was designed to shed light on unfolding developments in the spa travel sector, including the health of the market, pricing, consumer adoption and demographics, and popular locations and amenities. It seems that despite the recovering economy, more than nine in ten travel agents report that global hotel, resort and destination spas are actually offering more, or holding firm on, special deals and low pricing in 2010 compared with 2009. Which means prices are staying stagnant, or even lower than last year, a trend I would say is echoed clearly here too. Additionally, the two most powerful consumer trends in the US this year are: 1) an increased interest in vacations/travel with a specific health/wellness focus; and 2) more “social spa-ing,” i.e., friends, groups and families traveling together to spas for special occasions or celebrations. Ditto, we are seeing the same from our clients at Spa Ireland.
Back to the US and for the first-half 2010, the modest economic recovery underway is reflected in the measurable (if similarly modest) gains in spa travel: 36% report spa travel has increased in the first six months of 2010; 39% claim it’s remained about the same; while 25% cite year-over-year declines. (Compare that to the 58% of agents reporting declines in first-half ’09). The majority (albeit slim, at 52%) report the economic recovery is now having a direct, positive impact on spa travel bookings - and the optimism for full-year 2010 is higher: 61% predict overall growth this year, with only 7% expecting year-over-year declines.
Also, a surprising 44% of agents report even more aggressive spa travel deals in 2010 over 2009, while 48% report the bargains are holding firm. This industry “deal” strategy matches what consumers have been conditioned to expect: Agents report that the #1 change in spa travelers’ behavior in 2010 is “seeking significant deals,” followed by “opting for shorter vacations,” and “traveling closer to home.” With so many Irish spa hotels now being run by NAMA, we too can see the evidence of cut price dealing and arguably, the value on offer to Irish consumers this year is greater than it was in 2009.
Health & Wellness Travel continues to surge with sixty-six percent of agents (up from 52% last year) reporting their clients are showing a markedly increased interest in vacations with a dedicated health/wellness focus (i.e., hitting the spa to lose weight, for fitness, yoga programmes, etc.). Additionally, 88% of agents report that health/wellness offerings are now important to their clients (up from 83% in ’09). And for spa travelers there’s no conflict between seeking “pampering” and “wellness,” with 96% of agents arguing that “traditional pampering” is important to spa travelers today (same figure as ’09). However, spa “spirituality offerings” seem to be declining in importance: Last year 70% of agents reported they were important to clients, but that number fell to 38% in 2010.
Last, but by no means least from this survey, Spa Access Remains #1 Consideration for Travelers. For the fourth straight year, access to spa facilities ranks as the number 1 consideration for travelers, followed by: 2) proximity to a beach 3) sightseeing 4) hiking and nature-based activities 5) shopping. Access to golf facilities and skiing claimed the last spots. I don't think the Irish are quite at the stage of putting 'Must have a Spa' at the top of our holiday destination wish list but we may well get there eventually.

Indulgence Candle - 01 Nov 2010
Tranquility, Harmony... Aromatherapy Associates.
I like Aromotherapy Associates because the product house continues to use the best and most evocative oils as raw natural ingredients.
This new Indulgence Candle, packaged in a classic soft gold box and encased in frosted glass, is especially nice for these dark wintry evenings. Made from natural plant wax and fragranced with pure essential oils of jasmine and geranium, the Indulgence Candle brings tranquillity and a delectable aroma to your home or indeed office. Known as the king of flowers, jasmine is prized for its exotic, sensual scent as well as its ability to enhance intuition and creativity with its euphoric effects. Meanwhile, sweet, earthy geranium harmonises the room and helps to bring the emotions back into alignment. With up to 30 hours of burning time, this candle will see you through this month and on towards the bright lights of December.

Candle Art - 26 Oct 2010
A candle to boost prosperity in business?
Every now and again a novel and mildly quirky piece of news comes our way and we feel compelled to share it with you.
Candle Art in Spain makes high quality candles from beeswax and a mix of roots, plants and seeds. 300 varieties are produced to touch on all the hurdles we're likely to encounter on life's magical and sometimes turbulent journey - love, money, employment, studies, relationships - there's a candle for every situation.
But we're most taken with the herbal petition candle for business. Candle Art say it "improves job quality and everything related to productivity and abundance". Best used during a waxing moon or on a Thursday. What more can we say, maybe both Brian's (Cowen and Lenihan) could do with one burning gently in their offices at Leinster House.

Elemis Exotic - 01 Oct 2010
Second perfume launched by top beauty product company.
Back in April we told you that Elemis had launched it's first ever fragrance simply called 'Elemis'. Clearly, this has been a successful digression away from traditional beauty products for the 20-year old company and Elemis has now launched perfume number two, Eau de Parfum Exotic.
The blend for this new fragrance includes Sri Lankan Cinnamon Bark, Pink Pepper and Clove Bud Oil, with additional Ylang Ylang, Indian Jasmine Sambac and White Tuberose. As you know, I truly love the descriptive terms used to sell perfume and this one is particularly evocative because it's actually true! The blurb describes how the fragrance 'evolves....deepening and darkening into a mysterious fusion....scented with Cedarwood grown in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Sensual. Passionate. Wonderfully Warm". There is no doubt, this is a warm perfume, and if you close you eyes you could definitely imagine yourself high in the Atlas mountains, watching the sunset and breathing in the delicious North African smells. Plus it gets better the longer you wear it, a bonus for those of us who like to feel enveloped in our perfume of choice for longer than the ten minutes immediately after our quick spray.
Available from September 2010 at Elemis spas around Ireland, check out our Advanced Spa Search for a full list. Or simply ask Louis Walsh where he bought his! Spa Search

Inspirational ideas at 100% Design London
Good design can make or break a spa. It doesn't matter if a spa is tiny; if the design is right, and the use of light and materials is sensible, the tiniest of spaces can appear spacious and airy. The big boys of Spa design - ESPA - do design superlatively. But not every spa can be an ESPA so if you're running a spa, or thinking about it, and looking for some decent design inspiration, head to the 100% Design Show at Earl's Court, London, from 23-26 September.
The aisles will be alive with architects and groovy designer types but don't let that put you off. Just for fun look out for Lamiflex's new exercise bike Ciclotte. Designed by Luca Schieppati, Ciclotte's unmistakable form, of one large circle and two horns, is reminiscent of the Victorian Unicycles and pretty wow. Plus we are totally in love with the wooden baths from William Garvey, they would sit beautifully in any Irish spa, well worth a view.

Healing in the Algarve - 01 Sep 2010
The Ultimate Wellness Getaway
With Portugal so well serviced by Irish airlines, and many Irish people owning holiday homes there, the country is almost a natural extension of Ireland so we feel reasonably justified in giving a mention on our very Irish website to the Longevity Wellness Resort in Monchique on the Algarve.
There's a lot that's unique about this place, and it's just jumped to the top of my list of places I want to visit. Pitching itself as the first integrated 5 star wellness resort in the Algarve and nestled in the green hills of Monchique with breathtaking views of the hills and the Algarve coast, this is a mountain and nature retreat but only 15 minutes from two main cities in the Algarve (Portimão and Silves).
It claims to be the first medical spa in Portugal and is engaged in an exclusive partnership with La Clinique de Paris and Dr. Claude Chauchard, a world leading expert in Preventive Medicine and Ageing Management. The resort has three separate areas of focus - Wellness and Relaxation, Beauty and Rejuvenation and Health and Longevity. There is a wide range of programmes from Slimming and Detox to Beauty and Health Optimization but you could quite easily just sit and admire the views.
Accommodation is in spacious, elegant and fully fitted suites (one-bedroom apartments) as opposed to hotel bedrooms and every effort has been made to ensure this resort 'fits' the natural setting and is respectful of the imperative to be as eco friendly as possible.

Fresh from the foothills of the Atlas Mountains
We know we're Spa Ireland but we also like to look at the world beyond our little island, especially when that world is Morocco, a country we spent weeks exploring many moons ago (12 hour jeep ride across the desert in 40 degree heat anyone?
Brought to you from the foothills of the stunning Atlas mountains, love+art is a new organic beauty range, that harnesses the all important mantra of environmental awareness and utilises sustainable ingredients, harvested from a very special garden in the Ourika Valley.
The nourishing, delicately scented products are made from plants and flowers carefully yielded in tune with nature, that support, rather than alter, the local eco-structure. The Garden itself - Le Jardin Bio-aromatic de l’Ourika
- is situated in the Ourika Valley, 35 kilometres south-east of Marrakech, 840m above sea level in a part of the world that is exceptionally beautiful and bio-diverse. It's home to over 45 species of medicinal and aromatic plants and is run and managed by local women, giving them the opportunity to contribute towards the economy of the region where traditionally they have not been involved in their own economic well-being. All ingredients sourced from the garden are wild-crafted and organically cultivated, grown with love, integrity and respect for the natural environment. Hence the love+art (great name, and we also like the simple packaging).

Spa Guestrooms - 09 Aug 2010
NEW - at the Radisson Blu Limerick
One of our more popular spas, the 4 star Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa in Limerick, has just launched their new dedicated Spa Guestrooms.
So, what to expect with this new concept? Dedicated Spa Guestrooms will include deluxe Elemis beauty products, fluffy bathrobe and slippers, mineral water and a glossy magazine. The upgrades are offered on all luxury Spa breaks and are just the kind of pleasures designed to turn your hotel stay into something special.
“In this highly competitive market, we have had to come up with new ways of enticing our Spa guests to stay with us” said Tom Shanahan, Director of Sales and Marketing. “We have decided to offer our guests on spa packages an added incentive to stay, with these complimentary upgrades.
And the key word here is 'complimentary', as these extras are all included free for guests staying on a spa package. Nice to see added value rather than cut throat price reductions being used to incentivise clients to stay, we're sure this will be a great success.

Eve Lom - 15 Jul 2010
New Daytime Cleanser - Glow On
I discovered Eve Lom during what was quite possibly the very best facial I ever had. It was in the Killarney Park Hotel Spa, the facial lasted for about two hours and I came away a new person.
Almost 10 years later and I still use Eve Lom. I love the thoroughness of the cleanser and the fact that it's enough in itself to get rid of all the grime, you don't need to faff about with anything else. I was looking forward to trying out their new daytime cleanser, Glow On, which the good people at Eve Lom describe as a lightweight balm that rinses off without any need to use the traditional Eve Lom muslin cloth.
So online I went, and credit card in hand I was all set to purchase my £35.00 product...only to discover the international postage was going to cost another £15.00! Takes all the good out of online shopping so instead, I will make my way to the Killarney Park Spa or Harvey Nicks in Dundrum and stock up.

More new products and more tempting treats
During the Global Spa Summit in Istanbul I was lucky enough to catch up with Sean Harrington, Managing Director of Elemis in the UK.
Refreshingly open and willing to share the secrets to operating a successful spa treatment and product brand it's no surprise to see Elemis launching yet more new and tempting body products which will unquestionably make their way into many a bathroom.
This time it's a new Shower Cream and Skin Nourishing Hand and Body Lotion. The Shower Cream features Camelia, Macadamia and Jojoba Oils combined with extracts of Oat Kernel and Wheat Germ. Great for dry skin.
The Hand and Body Lotion also has the same ingredients but additionally, Sesame and Shea Butter along with Limanthes Alba which sounds wonderful even if I have no idea what it is!

Hot Oil, Ice House - 25 May 2010
New treatments to tempt you.
We like the Ice House, located just outside Ballina, Co Mayo and perched above the River Moy. It's a mix of old and new architecture, is managed by young and enthusiastic staff and the spa menu actually changes from time to time which means there is always a good reason to make a return visit.
The newest additions to the menu include a Hot Oil Full Body Massage for two where a creamy massage candle is melted and poured over the full body as a precious massage oil - €175.00 for 60 minutes. The Ice House has a fab hot outdoor tub so if it were me, I'd indulge in a chilled glass of champagne in the tub after that hot oil treatment.
Or you could try the Four Hands Full Body Massage Ritual - just you, two therapists, how indulgent is that? 60 minutes costs €150.00. And what about a Hot Oil Facial - relax and melt into this Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage, followed by a Yon’Ka Mini Facial, using warm aromatic melted oil. A journey for the senses - 60 minutes for €90.00.
Six Senses - 17 May 2010
New Paris Spa
My best buy of the year - so far - was the wonderful "Balancing Senses", which is the Six Senses Spa Book and which I found, believe it or not, at The National Gallery Of Ireland bookshop for the princely sum of €15.00.
It's a stunning book which includes loads of spa sense, menus, breathtaking spa photos and will leave you salivating at the thought of a break in one of the featured Six Senses Spas.
Well, you don't have to go too far (even if this famous brand has yet to open its doors in Ireland); Paris has a brand new urban spa, the Six Senses Rue de Castiglione.
A vertical wall garden runs between the spas two floors and an image of the romantic Parisian skyline is projected onto the walls of the spa and visible from all six treatment rooms.
You can try out the exclusive Paris Roof Tops Honey Facial, an anti-ageing treatment which uses honey sourced from local rooftop hives. And you can also purchase our very own VOYA, plus Aromatherapy Associates products, both in keeping with the spa's organic and ethical philosophy.

Hair today, Gone tomorrow - 10 May 2010
Summer is sidling up on us, with cheeky bursts of sunshine dominating April and May proving to be a month of many seasons (a bit chilly thus far but hey, we live in hope of a heatwave).
The slow surge in temperature and humidity provokes a nagging sense of unease in women all over the country. Why? Because the hike in heat level means it's time to flash the flesh and this means some serious defuzzing.
We all know shaving can be tiresome and waxing is, well just plain painful. So Spa Ireland pricked up our ears when we heard about Remington's latest invention - i-LIGHT. It's a home spa alternative to the more costly laser treatments currently on offer in many spas and whilst laser can be the answer to a hairy girls prayers, it's not for everyone. The i-LIGHT is a hand held device that emits an intense pulse of light energy that is absorbed by the skins melanin in the hair follicle. The science bit translates that this energy surge stunts hair growth to leave hair free skin for up to 3 months. Sounds to us like a lighter version of laser and a possible option to those allergic to wax (mentally and physically).
Suitable for both men and women and available via all major retailers (try Boots), we'll be curious to see how popular it becomes.
Herbal Healing - 01 May 2010
Let's play doctor
While the bite of the recession seems to be abating, people are still a little sensitive about spending. Even more so when it comes to spending on something we need but do not particulary want. Supplements and medicinal supplies spring to mind so a recent feature on the Afternoon Show on RTE supplied some welcome information. Sarah Hughes is a medicinal herbalist and she discussed thrifty, and natural cures for common ailments.
Raid the herb rack, because they will go further than flavouring food as Sarah showed. Here's our favourites:
The leaves of Rosemary are hailed for their depression relieving properties, not to mention headaches, bloating and indigestion.
Thyme flowers are a powerful antiseptic that boosts immune system and sorts out throat troubles.
Our top remedy is the Valerian Hot Chocolate used to aid sleep and alleviate anxiety. We always knew chocolate had super powers!

ESPA Eyes - 30 Apr 2010
Keep them twinkling
Therapists always have the best beauty tips but if you're like me, you're too busy snoring your way through your relaxing facial to really listen to them.
ESPA know this and so share with us via email some simple, but sound advice from Kathryn, one of the therapists at Gleneagles in Scotland. "Always apply eye cream using your ring finger to stop you from dragging the delicate skin around your eyes. Drink those eight glasses of water a day to flush the toxins out and help the process with a quick massage technique: Gently press above and below your eye, working out from the nose, after applying anti-ageing ESPA 24 Hour Eye Complex. For that extra cool twinkle I keep mine in the fridge."
We have a number of Spa Ireland ESPA spas around the country including the Europe Resort in Killarney and the ever popular Ritz-Carlton Powerscourt, check out their property profiles to find the best deals.
Home Spa - 22 Apr 2010
What do you have in your cupboard?
A recent wet evening with nothing planned prompted me to dig into my bathroom cupboards to see what goodies I'd stored there in the hope of a little home spa indulgence.
Amongst the multitude of hotel toiletries (I always sample - a great way to try out new products, especially if you've picked these up outside Europe) I found, and used, two exceptional products, both had coincidentally been gifted to me by a good friend who knows I love any kind of bathroom 'stuff'.
First up, I tried Green Angel Natural Salt Body Smoother. I had the Sunset version, which includes Lavender, Marjoram & Juniper. I confess, I am not crazy about the packaging (the Body Smoother comes in one of those industrial type glass jars which to me, are ideal for jam and that's about it) but packaging aside, this is probably the best Body Smoother I have ever tried. It beats the mega expensive deluxe brands hands down and even managed to make some headway with my feet and heels, truthfully the toughest little beggars you could find in terms of rough skin. It was wonderfully effective and left my skin silky smooth and shiny all over. Green Angel is an Irish brand and use natural salts and oils, always nice to support home product houses, they need our business.
Next up, I tried Dr Hauschka Cleansing Clay Mask, which was a neat sachet size and which had been picked up in a swanky department store in Berlin for under €2.00. Again, a little bit of effort required, you have to mix the powder with a couple of teaspoons of water and then plaster it on your face and neck for 10 minutes. I met up with a friend the next day who unprompted told me my skin looked great, younger even. Not bad for an evening spent plundering the bathroom! Dr Hauschka is available in most good health stores and remarkable value for such a well established and proven brand.
Drip and Chill - 15 Apr 2010
A complete recharge for £120?
We're always on the look out to hear about new treatments, or revitalised versions of ones already out there. So we must credit the London Evening Standard and journalist Victoria Stewart for her review of the Drip and Chill, a specially formulated saline drip of powerful antioxidants and nutrients designed to calm or give a sense of recharged energy depending on the formula you choose.
Available at the EF MediSpa in Kensington Church Street, London (www.efmedispa.com), Drip and Chill is a selection of super cocktails formulated by Dr Marion Gluck and administered by a nurse after your blood pressure and medical history have been taken.
Popular with the likes of Madonna and Cindy Crawford, there's probably a good chance this treatment would be useful if you've come through a long cold winter, or a bout of illness, and need a little boost to get your blood flowing and body singing. Will we see them offered in Dublin I wonder? Cost from £120.00.
Airport Spas - 07 Apr 2010
Not just a flash in the pan fad.
Recently I flew Emirates Business Class via Dubai where I had a four hour stopover but for once, I wasn't dreading the boring hours I'd have to spend in transit. The Emirates lounge itself is as large as a small hotel and neatly tucked into the central area is Timeless Spa, an oasis of calm and indulgence - I'd been dying to try it out for some time.
Having pored over the dinky menu, and finally decided on a De-Stress Back Massage ($39) and a Refresh Manicure ($22) I went to book my slot only to find the spa was full! Chock a block. Not a single appointment available. The same story on my way back via Dubai so it wasn't just a once off, this spa is seriously busy.
As I looked around and pouted a bit in the hope the lovely Thai receptionist would take pity on me, I realised that the majority of people in the spa - stealing my opportunity to get a little bit of pampering - were men. Well groomed, pleasant and nicely relaxed business men.
I also realised that Timeless Spa has got all the elements which make for a successful spa right; compact, but comprehensive menu with a good selection of stress relieving massages and beauty treatments; fair prices (you would certainly not get a Polish in many other places for $9); two excellent internationally famous beauty products (Sodashi and Babor) and a local product, Timeless Traditions. In short, all the right ingredients to make an Airport Spa work. I'll be trying it again next time I fly via Dubai in the hope Emirates will have expanded the spa itself to cater for grumpy, disappointed frequent flyers like me.
Elemis launches its first fragrance - 01 Apr 2010
Elemis Eau de Parfum
After 20 successful years in the world of skincare and spa treatments, Elemis has launched its first ever fragrance, simply called "Elemis - Eau de Parfum".
Described by Elemis as a 'full-strength' fragrance, the 'initial euphoric burst of zesty Elemi and Sweet Grasses softens into a gentle, breezy Marine Accord that mingles with rich-yet-refreshing Vetiver, helping to clear and centre the mind'. I truly love the copy written about perfumes, describing a perfume is a licence to be poetic and let's face it, it's pretty hard describing scent without resorting to flowery language.
Ask about the new fragrance at your local Spa Ireland Elemis Spa, there are 7 listed on our site including the Falls Hotel in Ennistymon and Radisson Blu Hotels in Limerick and Galway.
Spa & Surgery - 24 Mar 2010
Are we turning all LA?
Once a distant and urban myth that belonged in Hollywood, cosmetic plastic surgery has become a reality in Ireland and seems to be an acceptable consideration to cure most ageing ills.
Dr 90210 has come knocking on our living room doors in the form of the Cosmetic Surgery Show that was broadcast recently on TV3. For those of you not familiar, Dr 90210, aka Robert Rey is an uber famous surgeon to the wealthy in LA. The show, co-presented with Caroline Morahan portrayed a rich market for cosmetic procedures and a vanity obsessed population.
With demand identified and growing, the range of treatments becoming available is increasingly complex - eye bag removal anyone? We are all for freedom of choice, but the area is getting muddied as across the pond, surgical procedures are slipping between the classification rules and ending up on the menus of our beloved spas.
We hope a spa will remain a place of nurturing for your inner self, and not a luxurious hideaway to undertake your own personal 'operation transformation'.
White Witches - 18 Mar 2010
In the Dragons Den
It's a tough thing to present your ideas before the Dragons Den and be subjected to such intense scrutiny on what inevitably, is a hard sell of your own business baby.
Hats off to Ruth Ruane who has developed and produces a range of natural beauty products under the brand name White Witch. She is up against stiff competition in this arena but it is always good to see someone follow their gut and put their heart into making a business out of an idea. The reaction from the Dragons was less than positive - I think the brand name was a stumbling block for some whilst for others, the proposition just didn't smell of enough cash potential for a return on any investment.
Make up your own mind, for details check out White Witch
Silver Surfers - 10 Mar 2010
Spa for those of us not quite in the first flush of youth.
We've already given you the heads up on the top ten spa trends of 2010 and one in particular, the diversity trend does deserve a slice of solitary spa blog time.
With 2010 a special year anyway - a decade down and no Armageddon, yet, it is also a pivotal time for the emergence of a new grey market in spa.
Traditionally spas have been the preserve of the young and beautiful with cosmetically enhancing treatments taking the lion's share of the trade. In the US alone 78 million people are entering their 60s and with the increasing transcience towards wellness, rather than beauty, the market is about to turn on its heels. What's also interesting is that while spa itself has ancient roots, the advanced population are for the most part virgins to the industry. For some, the first time spa experience can be an uncomfortable one, to be approached gingerly but fear not, there is a wide variety of non contact treatments available, making the spa experience yours and yours alone.
Flotation is a magical treatment that many approach with trepidation but once you try it you'll be totally hooked. Enjoy virtual body weightlessness and remember that a 20 minute session equates to a 2 hour sleep. Not only does it aid relaxation, it relieves stress on joints and muscle and you needn't worry, you will be snug and dry throughout.
Thermal Suites are the backbone of any spa visit and are designed to accentuate the nurturing experience you will have received from your treatment. Usually a collection of rooms that take you on wet and dry, warm and cold temperature journey, this is where you can detox, relax, rejuvenate, excape – all are words synonymous with the thermal suite experience. Think steam room, sauna, laconioum, tepidarium. Our recommendation - take a midweek spa break to test the waters, the thermal Suites will be especially quiet and you can go figure out all the water stuff without looking silly.

Snow Worry - 16 Feb 2010
Seoid Spa at Dunboyne Castle can help with SAD.
Sunshine and summer are words synonymous with energy and vitality. No surprises then that winter spells gloom for some. For some of us, the weather matches our mood in the form of Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as SAD.
The medical mumbo jumbo behind this elusive disorder reckons that the human body uses light cues, such as those provided by the sun, to time certain functions. Properly timed rhythms regulate mood, sleep, wake, appetite, digestion and energy. These daily internal cycles sometimes go out of synch (due to the decreasing amounts of light in winter), meaning an unregulated body clock, resulting in the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Some people brush it off as winter blues – call it what you will, it can still wreak havoc on our emotional balance.
There is soome good advice available for SAD sufferers on the website SAD UK but light therapy has also proven to be quite successful (this is the exposure to daylight by a light box). Seoid Spa at Dunboyne Castle, Co. Meath offer a virtual reality experience called Sabbia Med in which you lie in an area which simulates a heated beach and experience sunrise to sunset. Vitamin D is stimulated and energy levels boosted. Dunboyne Castle

The special Valentine's Dinner menu includes oysters (documented by the roman’s in the second century as an aphrodisiac), vanilla - (believed to increase lust), nutmeg (highly prized by chinese women as an aphrodisiac though large quantities can produce a hallucinogenic effect (maybe that's a good thing!) and strawberries – perfect for hand feeding your lover being described in erotic literature as “fruit nipples.” Two special dinner menus are on offer, from €50.00 per person.
Prolong the passion with the fabulous overnight Valentine's package including Dinner, bed and breakfast, Champers and Flowers, sea view room and spa treatment for only €159 per person sharing.

Gourmet Spa - 03 Feb 2010
Treatments good enough to eat.
We love our food in the office (Listons on Camden Street make the best fish chowder in the city!) so it's no surprise that we love spa treatments that have names good enough to eat. Temple Spa near Moate, Co Westmeath has been around for a while and gets good feedback on it's food as much as it's treatments but we think we can easily put together the equivalent of a 3-course slap-up meal with treatments.
For starters, awaken your senses with a beautiful bathing ritual scented with herbal oils such as Rosemary and Thyme to uplift. For the main event– be smothered with an indulgent Chocotherapy Wrap. A perfect paradox, this treatment is an anti-cellulite treatment. Enjoy a white and plain chocolate cocoon without the calories – Yum! Skip the desert and go straight to a digestif. We all know a glass or 2 of quality red is good for the heart, but white wine has its own healing powers in the form of the Vinotherapy Facial. An anti-aging treatment using Chardonnay Grapes the results may leave you light headed but your skin will glow.
Relax - 27 Jan 2010
The ultimate relaxation space
The Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall is another one the new breed eco-boutique-hotel-spa's and we can think of 3 great reasons to try it out.
1. It's on our doorstep and just a quick hop across the English channel.
2. They use VOYA products so this makes them practically Irish!
3. Their deep relaxation space with it's hanging pods has got to be once of the coolest spaces of it's kind. We love bravery in design and style and The Scarlet has it by the bucket load.

Spa 2010 - 21 Jan 2010
Escape the Island - Top Tips from the Sunday Times
We know we're Spa Ireland and we spend a lot of time advocating the use of our home spas. That said, the relentless snow and cold we've endured for the past month does give us an urge to dream a little and visualise steamy pools in exotic locations, poolside massages and post facial siestas under a warm sun. And the best inspiration so far was provided by the Sunday Times Style magazine dated 27 December, with a whole 5 page spread on what they deem to be the hottest spas on the planet.
The Six Senses Resorts in Jordan may be easier to reach than you think (we see bmi offering great flight deals ex Heathrow to Amman). Evason Ma'in Hot Springs & Six Senses Spa is close to the Dead Sea and so treatments make the most of that natural resource. This is the place to relax after you've toured Petra and trekked the desert.
Closer to home, La Reserve Ramatuelle near St Tropez in France is about 10 minutes drive away from the resort itself, tucked away in the hills. The emphasis is on rest and rejuvenation and 6-day programmes are recommended so you can lose weight, manage your stress and basically reinvent yourself for 2010.
Shunya in Spain, Palace Merano in Italy and the One and Only in Cape Town all make the list but if we had to choose, and if we manage to pull the rabbit out of the hat by winning the Euro Millions, we'd be on a flight to Constance Halaveli Resort in the Maldives and signing up for their three day personalised Wellness Journey. The Times tells us that the sand is raked daily and the island is sprayed for mosquitoes. All treatment rooms have glass-covered holes in the floor, giving you a nice view of the fish swimming below you as you lie face down having your worries massaged away. Somehow 'bliss' doesn't quite sound strong enough to describe it. But it's now firmly on our list and will provide endless dreamy moments in the months ahead as we work out how to make it a reality!

Mount Juliet, The Heritage, Whites - NEW! - 15 Jan 2010
Giving you more spa choice.
We're happy to say we've just added three new spa properties to www.spa-ireland.com and in keeping with our aim of offering you the best, and most reliable choice, we've got 3 very different options.
Whites of Wexford is bang in the heart of Wexford (which, incidentally, has more fabulous cake shops than anywhere else I know in the country). White's is famous for it's Cryotherapy treatment, a respected, if somewhat chilling approach to treating sports related injuries.
Electric Picnic goers will all be familiar with The Heritage in Killenard, especially those who have camped out in wet conditions during the music festival and dreamt they were tucked up like the celebs in the nearby 5-star hotel. The spa here is a serious spa, a huge choice of treatments are on offer and the spa 'journey' is well designed.
And last, but not least, Mount Juliet is one of our personal favourites, located so brilliantly within easy reach of almost everywhere in the country. The spa is compact and the treatments are excellent.
The Mount Juliet January Offer features overnight accommodation with Full Irish Breakfast from just €69.50 per person sharing for the months of January, February and March. Guests can then choose a spa treatment of their choice from a large range of treatments, for just €25. Yes - you read that correctly, €25.00. The range includes: the rebalance facial, Matis chocolate wrap, reflexology, Reiki, full body massage, facial, scalp and tension massage and Softime dry flotation. And for guests who book this offer there is an additional 40% discount on further spa treatments booked. Due to limited availability and high demand, guests are advised to book before January 31st, to avoid disappointment (and terms and conditions do apply so please check when booking).
Don't dally, go to Mount Juliet Spa Offer
Spa Days - 13 Jan 2010
Treat yourself to one of our top choices.
So it’s all over, and all you have to show for it, is a gaping hole in your pocket and a waistline to rival Santa’s. As much as we love Christmas, we can’t help but be glad to say goodbye to it, as the over-indulgence has left us feeling sluggish and lethargic. January is perfect to re-connect with yourself, as its your social life’s low season, so why not grab your spa gear, leave your worries aside and head for a day of body bliss. Ok, so the waistline may require a little more than a day but your body confidence will soar when you emerge with a newborn spa glow. Some Spa Ireland choices...

For the “2 is company” types. Ok so we're breaking the rules with this overnight package but at €99 for a nights midweek spa stay per person sharing, its time to repay the many favours your best mate has given you..or time to call in that favour yourself at Farnham Estate, Co Cavan. Farnham Estate

Beaut.ie Guide to Gorgeous - 08 Jan 2010
Your definitive beauty bible for 2010.
These days there are almost too many beauty bibles around and we get dizzy trying to find the ones that best suit our skin type, not to mention our budgets. Many are inevitably, and justifiably, biased in favour of the beauty product houses that have produced the tomes - think Bobbi Brown's wonderful Make-up Manual.
We do really like the beaut.ie Guide to Gorgeous because it is refreshingly lacking in corporate brand-speak and instead, filled with tip after tip on best beauty buys.
Divided into logical sections dealing with the likes of foundation, cleanser, body scrubs etc, it offers opinion and advice in equal measures. Written by Aisling McDermott, who together with her sister Kirstie, are the queens of beauty blogging with their beaut.ie - Beaut.ie, it's pithy, funny and will make you want to clear out your beauty bags and try out some of the suggested products (for Eve Lom virgins everywhere it is truly THE best cleanser in the world, though we are very keen to try out the cheaper suggested alternative from Liz Earle).
Available from all good bookstores and beauty palaces, including Queen Beauty Emporium on Aungier Street in Dublin. Go on, curl up in front of the fire and read on.
Something Fishy - 04 Jan 2010
It is not an altogether new concept but here on Irish shores, where our ethnic spa offering is still evolving, the idea of fish pedicures usually results in rapturous laughter.
America, however has been enjoying this odd treatment for over a year now. The founder of Doctor Fish Massage, John Ho, wanted to offer his clients an alternative to razors used to remove skin during pedicures (clients expressed hygiene concerns about the razors). Enter Garra Rufa, or Doctor Fish, as they are aptly known.
These toothless fish nibble away at dead skin on the feet, as it is the only food source available to them in the hot water foot tanks. The client then enjoys a pretty normal pedicure experience with 15 – 20 minutes of foot pampering after the fish-fest. The treatment has received positive reviews, with many describing the experience as pleasant, if a little ticklish.
