Plus it's the ideal place to pick up Christmas gifts for those you love, and find something special within your budget - the choice is vast.

Global Spa & Wellness Summit - 01 Nov 2014

Global Spa & Wellness Summit

Key Takeaways From Morocco

The Global Spa Summit is a great event, attended by serious and influential people who make a difference globally in the world of spa. Spa Ireland was sorry to miss this years conference not least because it took place in one of our favourite cities, Marrakech. We thought we would share key takeaways with our readers (as described on the official website) by way of the top ten major shifts in the wellness industry.

Architecture and Design Reboot
For decades, the spa industry has relied on Asian-influences to guide not only spa menus but also the look and feel of its facilities. Danish architecture maverick Bjarke Ingels told delegates: “You not only have the ability, you have the responsibility to change the spaces we live in.” His envelope-pushing designs promise to inspire a complete re-think in how to approach spa architecture and, importantly, create sustainable designs that increase, rather than decrease enjoyment. Ingels’ waste-processing-plant-cum-ski-slope is a case in point.

Authenticity in Overdrive
Authenticity, the seeking of local, indigenous experiences, has long been a rallying cry in spa and wellness treatments but mass urbanization and the rise of the Millennials have ratcheted up an insistence for “can’t get anywhere else” experiences.

Outsmarting Your Genes: Personalized Preventative Medicine
“Predictive, personalized, preventative healthcare will transform the landscape of healthcare over the next decade,” said Dr. Nasim Ashraf of DNA Health Corp. “Epigenetic testing is essentially the science of outsmarting your genes.”

Generational and Gender Shift to Youth and Women Spa and wellness marketers need to cast a wider net by focusing more on emerging generations – Millennials and generation Z (for want of a better term)–that are different than the aging, time-rich Baby Boomers most wellness marketers have focused on to date. (For example, generation Z is the first to have never lived without the influences of social media and technology.) A massive demographic shift from male to female is also occurring.

Urbanization to Supersede Suburbanization
The future will have a marked move away from suburbanization to urbanization, and in 2030, 80 percent of all people will live in urban settings.

The Loneliness Epidemic
“We used to die of old age, soon we’ll be dying of loneliness,” said Nordstrom. Urbanization, technology and demographic shifts are driving an overarching sense of “aloneness” that spa and wellness centers will help abate. Thirty years from now, 60 percent of households will be single.

Wellness Tourism Momentum Continues
Less than a year ago, the GSWS and long-term research partner SRI International launched the concept of wellness tourism to the world. Today, governments and companies are embracing this key market segment with an estimated value of US$494 billion and growth of 12.5 percent year-on-year.

Authentic African Renaissance
Indigenous and authentic experiences will lead many travelers to countries they’ve never experienced before, and Africa, a continent most of the world has little understanding of and is often associated with disease and chaos by the mainstream media, will be at the heart of this wellness tourism explosion.

Technology on Fast Forward
According to Paul Price, keynote speaker and retail and marketing expert, for good or bad, technology will not only remain at the forefront of our world but it will embed itself even deeper, altering the way we do everything–from how we shop to how companies market to us. Price told delegates: “Don’t be seduced by bright and shiny objects and don’t let the technology drive your decisions. Instead, consider moving your tech department into your marketing department so the IT team is driven by the marketers and not the other way around.”

Wellness Communities Make Comeback
Before the economic downturn there was a lot of talk of “spa real estate” but many of these projects crashed and burned right along with the economy. Now whole communities – and even whole cities – are being designed and branded with wellness at their very core. (Research released at the 2014 Summit showed that this market is now valued at US$100 billion.) Serenbe, a community outside Atlanta, GA, has been designed from the ground up with well-being informing every decision–creating a new kind of community with sustainability, green building, organic farming, culture, arts and fitness at its core.

The Kimye Effect - 01 Jul 2014

The Kimye Effect

Where to Honeymoon-Spa in Ireland?

It's been just over a month since newlywed superstars Kim Kardashian and Kanye West – nicknamed ‘Kimye’ – flew into Cork Airport on honeymoon, with rumours abound of where they had traveled to and what they were doing. Mundane cinema visits in the midlands vied with stories of entire castle book outs and that set us thinking where we might like to suggest for a little honeymoon spa break, particularly along the WAW - or Wild Atlantic Way - which runs from the far north in Donegal, right the way down our Atlantic Coast to the most southern tip of the country.

What about The Europe Resort and Spa (a brillliant Spa by the way) in Killarney with those gorgeous views over the lakes of Killarney and huge, comfy beds. Or Parknasilla Resort, near Sneem, where any happy couple could go for miles of cycles through the surrounding woodland, and return to the Spa for a deep muscle massage. Or what about coming inland a little to Cork and the Maryborough Hotel, with it's super chic ESPA spa and the fun and food of Cork on your doorstep. For more ideas, narrow your search on the Spa Ireland website down by selecting the counties you like in the search menu and you'll find lots to choose from. Happy Honeymooning.

Airbrush Make-up - 07 May 2014

Airbrush Make-up

Now Available at the Spa at Castlemartyr Resort

Delighted to share the latest blog from the Spa team at Castlemartyr Resort.

"Airbrush Make-Up, one of the most advanced products in the beauty world today has now been launched at The Spa at Castlemartyr Resort. Airbase is the air brush brand used by The Spa at Castlemartyr Resort. Airbase are the company which offer high end, silicone based make up to be applied by an airbrush. It was created by Judy Naake, the modest beauty guru that brought the now leading tanning product St. Tropez to the UK. Airbase has since had product development by Oscar nominated make-up artist Anni Buchanan.

We are living in a HD era and due to the latest technology advances on the screen traditional film and TV make-up is no longer flawless enough. However, airbase make-up is perfect for the unforgiving world of high definition. Because airbase make-up is airbrushed onto the skin, it atomises the product creating tiny particles that are not visible to the naked eye. Airbase is used by the contestants of X-Factor, the models of London Fashion Week and performers such as Rihanna. Air brush make-up is no longer a secret of the small screen and can be enjoyed by all for that special occassion. It is a fine mist of foundation and when it rests onto the skin it is a fine veil of make-up so strong it covers skin complaints and tattoos. Not only does it feel good on your skin but it has longevity and lasts up to 15 hours with no shine so it is perfect for brides or if you have an event coming up.

Airbase make-up is not water based so it does not sink into the skin. This is perfect for acne sufferers as it will not clog your pores and create spots. It is also waterproof so you will not need to touch it up for your special occassion if you are moved to tears. I decided to try it out for myself as I suffer from pretty bad acne rosecea and I wanted to see not only the coverage but how my skin would react. Sarah,my make-up artist, first used an airbase primer which is particularly effective because it was specifically designed and built with silicone in mind. Sarah applied the eye make-up first which seemed very unusual but correct for airbase make-up. The make-up was applied using a small spray gun and was very gentle on the skin. Once the make-up is applied blusher and bronzer are also applied using the air brush to contour the face. When Sarah was happy with the application she then touched up the eyes and lips to complete the look. I was amazed by the finished product as not only did it have an excellent coverage but it was flawless. I left the make-up on all day to try out its longevity and even went for a brisk walk that evening to test it out and yes it does what it says on the tin. My make-up was still in perfect condition when I removed it effortlessly that night. Airbase combines a unique mix of ingredients with silicone at the heart of its formulation. Feeling beautiful and luxurious on the skin, the silicone chosen does not clog your pores, allowing your skin to breathe. It is this that helps give airbase make-up unrivalled durabilty. Silicone is heat resistant, non-stick and plyable. That means that your airbase make-up application lasts all day and can be 'moved' for a few minutes unlike water based foundations. Any errors are therefore easy to correct after application. Airbase contains vitamin A, an ingredient that is proven to improve elasticity of the skin and therefore reduce fine lines. It also contains vitamin E. This is an anti-oxidant that moisturise and repairs helping to deactivate the free radicals that age the skin. Try out the new airbrush make-up with the introductory offer of €55.00 until 30th June 2014. Advanced bookings are required."

You can call the Spa at Castlemartyr Resort on +353 (0) 21 421 9000 for more information.

Pañpuri Inner Peace Relaxing Massage and Femme Fatale Candle - 06 Mar 2014

Pañpuri Inner Peace Relaxing Massage and Femme Fatale Candle

Shelbourne Special Offer

2014 continues to be the year of great treatments (is it just me, or have Irish therapists really started to make their mark as some of the best in the world?). I've been to the Spa at The Shelbourne before and praised this oasis in the heart of Dublin city but yesterday I was lucky enough to enough a Pañpuri Inner Peace Relaxing Massage, and it was 90 minutes of pure escape (thank you Ruth!).

The Shelbourne has an exclusive on this Thai product, and is the only spa in the country offering either treatments or the most gorgeous selection of lotions and potions. With my usual busy head, I went for the Pañpuri Inner Peace Relaxing Massage (which for a limited time comes with a complimentary Femme Fatale Candle at an all in price of €150 per person). This 90 minute massage uses Ylang Ylang extracts which, blended with Pañpuri’s natural base oils, create a sweetly exotic floral scent, to "perfectly align and open energy channels to receive the therapeutic benefits of Swedish, Aromatherapy and Shiatsu combination of massage strokes". Does it work - yes, it does, and the final stage, a cranial massage, is just magic.

The Femme Fatale Candles are inspired by historical women of intrigue - Eve, Cleopatra, Marilyn Monroe, Marie Antoinette; I went for the Eye of The Day, which has Mata Hari to thank for it's evocative scent - fresh lemon and pomelo cuttings, earthy hearts of freshly harvested galbanum, rhubarb and celery seeds with spicy airs of oak moss and musk. Exotic, sultry, a real treat.

Included in this special offer price - €150 per person - is your massage, your choice of Femme Fatale Candle and the Spa at the Shelbourne Refreshment plate, which is served after your treatment in the tranquility and luxurious surroundings of the relaxation room. If you are feeling lively you can also enjoy the spa facilities, pool, steam and sauna. For bookings call the Spa directly on +353 1 663 4500 or email spa.dubbr@theshelbournespa.com

Eve Lom Facial - 01 Mar 2014

Eve Lom Facial

Quite possibly the best facial in the world.

I have a confession to make; I am utterly committed to Eve Lom's Facial Cleanser and have been ever since my first Eve Lom facial at The Killarney Park Hotel Spa several years ago. Recently I returned to the hotel for another great stay, as ever enhanced by the superlative service that the team deliver on every visit. It was time to test the treatment and see if it still lived up to my memory as being the most thorough and effective facial on the market.

Eve Lom's philosophy is based on the belief that every living organism pulsates with energy, sending out information about the physical, biological and emotional state of the body. Through regular cleansing, decongestion and exfoliation, this energy can be regulated to help maintain healthy skin. So how does the facial work? First up, opt for the 90 minute session; you can do an hour long facial but frankly, that defeats the whole purpose. Spend the extra euros and enjoy 90 minutes of deep deep cleansing. After the therapist has evaluated your skin, it will be cleansed, and cleansed again, before the therapist applies a warm parraffin wax which will open the pores and make extractions easier. I love the parraffin, layer after layer is brushed onto the skin (smells sweet, don't worry, nothing like you would expect) until, once that final layer has cooled and hardened slightly, the whole 'mask' is removed, making you feel as if your skin is reborn. The therapist will then start the unique Eve Lom lymphatic massage which involves very light pressure and soft pumping movements to eliminate toxins, reduce puffiness and water retention and to stimulate cellular activity.

After this, the Eve Lom Rescue Mask is applied (this is clay based) and then removed with a hot chamomile soaked muslin cloth. Finally an ice-cold compress is used to close pores leaving skin looking radiant. Now my skin is a little tired these wintry days, and well aged as the years fly by, but the effects of this facial really are instant. You will glow. €145 euro very well spent. For bookings call the spa at The Killarney Park Hotel, +353 64 6635555 or Click Here
