Inbound Wellness - 01 Jul 2015
Top 12 Countries
Interesting report recently issued by The Global Wellness Institute’s (GWI) Global Spa & Wellness Economy Monitor which found that domestic wellness tourism constitutes the lion’s share of this travel category’s trips (84 percent) and spending (two-thirds). That is consistent with the fact that more people in general travel domestically rather than internationally (especially those living in massive countries like the U.S., China, India or Russia). And domestic wellness trips are higher in volume because they can be taken more frequently, and are shorter in duration.
However international wellness tourists are the huge spenders: They spend, on average,€1500 per trip—or roughly 60 percent more than the average country-hopping tourist. So let’s take a look at which 12 nations drive the most inbound/international wellness trips a year (and the numbers are inbound trips per year (million):
1. US (7.1)
2. France (6.9)
3. Austria (5.7)
4. Germany (5.6)
5. Switzerland (5.1)
6. Mexico (4.6)
7. UK (3.6)
8. Thailand (3.1)
9. Spain (2.6)
10. Canada (2.6)
11. Turkey (2.0)
12. China (2.)
Ireland is not on the list for obvious reasons (we have a tiny population) but European nations—with their strong, established wellness tourism infrastructure (so many health resorts and wellness retreats) and which also benefit from all that quick, close intra-European travel—grab seven of the top 12 spots. When you consider just how small nations like Austria or Switzerland are, their rankings are nothing short of amazing. Mexico is the clear inbound wellness tourism powerhouse of the Latin American world and “wellness-rich” Thailand dominates in Asia. The Spa at the Shelbourne - 01 Jun 2015
Elegance & Grace
A cold and misty evening in May is enough to send anyone to the warm embrace of a 5 Star spa and this week, I was lucky enough to try out the new Elegance & Grace package at the Spa at The Shelbourne. Elegance & Grace is
inspired by HRH Princess Grace of Monaco who was a regular guest at the hotel, and whose stunning Givenchy dress, which she wore on her State visit to Ireland in June 1961, is on display there.
The Elegance & Grace Spa Package "includes a combination of Pañpuri Siamese water jasmine body polish, Pañpuri Facial and Pañpuri Massage with a take home gift of a Pañpuri Elegance and Grace Candle. Together with full use of the hotel’s fitness and thermal facilities to include the wonderful pool, steam room and sauna and time spent in the unique relaxation room where you can enjoy a glass of Veuve Clicquot Rose Champagne overlooking St. Stephen’s Green, the Elegance & Grace Spa Package at The Spa at The Shelbourne costs €149.00 per person and is available until 31st August 2015".
And that's the blurb, but the experience itself really does live up to the verbiage. My therapist was Christine, she was just lovely, knows her stuff, knows when to talk, and when not to, and really made sure that the treatment was luxurious from start to finish. I completely forgot the cold and damp outside, and the take home candle really does mean the pleasure can continue beyond the Spa. You can also try out Pañpuri’s Elegance & Grace Perfume Diffuser which is a dark glass vessel filled with Elegance & Grace diffuser oil. Presented in a luxurious, hand-made gift box made with chlorine-free paper, the Pañpuri Elegance & Grace Perfume Diffuser would make for a stunning and stylish gift. The Pañpuri Elegance & Grace Perfume Candles go beyond wax and wicks - "hand-blown glass evoking nostalgia and glamour with the hand-poured creamy wax offering a clean, long-lasting burn". The Pañpuri Elegance & Grace range is available exclusively from The Spa at The Shelbourne. My only complaint was that the treatment had to end and that the superb Pañpuri Vanilla hand cream was sold out (it might well be the best hand cream in the world).

Mindful Millennials - 01 May 2015
Are you one?
So I confess, I'm not a Millennial. But I'm surrounded by them and was curious to read a piece on Mindful Millennials by Erica Orange, Executive Vice President at Weiner, Edrick, Brown, Inc.
With a purchasing power valued at approximately $1.68 trillion, Millennials (those born from 1981-1997) come across an average of 3,000+ brand images a day. 3,000!!! What a number, and almost impossible to imagine how anyone could make a decision with so much available choice. But the way they make decisions is based far more on their social network than on traditional branding activities – and they are seeking unique, authentic experiences that can make a difference both in their own lives and that of the greater social good.

Shower in the Garden of England - 15 Apr 2015
Elemis British Botanical Shower Cream
Elemis is a great brand, the products deliver and are well priced for most of us. The brand is also widely available across multiple spas in Ireland.
As we head into spring and then on towards summer, I'm taken by the packaging for the latest addition to the selection of products available; gorgeous wild flowers that distance us from the grey and dark of winter. Artist and designer Amanda Ross is behind the intricate, life-like images, all replicated from plant cuttings that reflect the formulations.
The ingredients are "the best of British. Rosemary and Omega-rich Echium oil soften the skin; Lavender, Geranium, Palmarosa and Chamomile are restorative and balancing; organic Oats, packed with minerals and vitamins, naturally moisturise, comfort and soothe. Grown in the garden of England, the ingredients are carefully picked and pressed within nine miles of the fields. Freshness is optimum. The environment is respected. The eco-system is supported. What you are left with is skin that is incomparably cleansed. Intensely nourished. Profoundly soft to the touch. The experience lingers on the senses. The delicious aromatic leaves a fragrant veil".

Spa Ireland first met Mark & Kira Walton from VOYA back when we were launching our website and it's wonderful to see the success the brand is now enjoying. Well earned and well deserved! Any lady, let alone the First Lady, will love getting a VOYA gift.
The Marker Spa - 01 Mar 2015
Dublin's Grand Canal Dock is now shaping up as one of the city's coolest quarters, helped by the presence of FaceBookers, Googlers and Air BnB'ers who all work, and now live in the area. I'm lucky enough to live there too, and after 10 years, it just keeps getting better. One of the best additions to the Square is The Marker Hotel and of course, the Spa at The Marker. Kirstian Florian treatments, a superb pool and, to my mind, one of the best masseuses in the country.
Luh is from Bali and is a typically charming Asian, filled with smiles and warmth. After too many hours hunched over a laptop and as many hours flying long-haul (economy class), my back, shoulders and neck were screaming for attention. I booked the one-hour Kirstin Florian Customised Massage which promises to "restore inner peace and harmony through the power of massage". Spa blurbs don't always deliver on the promises but this one really did. Greeted by Luh, and asked where I wanted her to focus, along with what level of pressure I wanted her to apply, there followed the most sublime one hour of massage brilliance; Luh really knows what she is doing and she managed to release the most stubborn of knots in the gentlest of ways. Gorgeous Kirstin Florian oil aromas, heated massage bed, mango smoothie and sorbet to finish enhanced it all.
€110.00 is not the cheapest massage in the city, but it is categorically one of the best and in my view, world-class. For bookings call The Marker Spa on 01 687 5194 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Global Spa & Wellness Summit - 01 Feb 2015
The Business of Wellness
Growing the $3.4 trillion wellness industry was the topic under discussion at a recent gathering of 17 executives from leading wellness-related companies and organizations as part of the ongoing work by The Global Spa and Wellness Summit to shape the industry and ensure best practice and shared insights. The group identified five key opportunities for growth in the industry, reproduced verbatim below as Spa Ireland thinks they're equally relevant to our smaller Irish spa industry:
Wellness is no longer for a specific age, gender or economic group. The benefits of wellness are now being felt across all demographics, thanks in large part to the affordable options from providers like Massage Envy. Extending the appeal of your wellness business to a wider range of people makes sense for growth. “Consumers are more exposed, practitioners are more exposed, and it just creates opportunity for everybody in the value chain,” said Richard Dantas, CEO of Carol’s Daughter.
Millennials spend money differently than baby boomers—they don’t necessarily buy big-ticket items like houses and cars, but they do spend on less-expensive luxuries like fitness, spa and travel. If you aren’t courting these customers already, you should be.
As employers begin fostering stronger relationships with employees using wellness as a cornerstone, there is a huge opportunity for the spa and wellness industry to participate in that relationship and help build wellbeing programs that work.
Increased Points of Entry
The fact that consumers are exposed to spa and wellness virtually everywhere they go—from airports to hotels to main street—means that brands are able to connect with them in more ways than ever before. It also will result in them being more receptive to wellness approaches.
Giving consumers real evidence to support the benefits of wellness will go a much longer way to convince them of its importance than any jargon could. (A good resource for this type of information is the recently launched www.wellnessevidence.com.) Real people and real results are your best sales tools, not data points and corporate messaging.
ESPA International - 15 Jan 2015
New Spas in Japan and Mexico
ESPA International is one of those global spa brands totally synonymous with great architecture, quality treatments and stellar service. We are lucky enough to have some prime examples here the Ireland - ESPA at The Hotel Europe and ESPA at Powerscourt Hotel immediately spring to mind - but it's also a truly global brand. So if you happen to be globe-trotting in 2015 check out one of the newer Spas:
NIZUC SPA BY ESPA, MEXICO

ESPA AT RITZ-CARLTON, KYOTO
Pictured here and inspired by Kyoto's ancient culture, ESPA at the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto pays homage to traditional Japanese design. Created in partnership with Peter Remedios of Remedios Studios, the décor incorporates delicate wood and luxurious textiles, alongside traditional rock gardens and waterfalls to present a serene and captivating space.
